I love this cartoon. Sure, the cartoonist is poking fun at so-called "annoying vegans," but I can totally relate to it. I love how "the first annoying vegan" is proposing problems that challenge the assumption that the "land of milk and honey" is an idyllic promised land.
I live in an area that can actually be described as the "land of milk and honey," both literally and figuratively. In the literal sense, dairy is a huge part of the local economy and culture where I live. So is honey, although not as big as dairy in economic terms. In the figurative sense, the settlers who colonized this area were Mormon pioneers who likened themselves to the Israelite exodus and the journey to settle in Zion. Honeybees (called "deseret" in the Book of Mormon) are the symbol for the state of Utah.
One week from today, July 24, is Pioneer Day here in Utah. In the spirit of the "first annoying vegan," I plan to write a few posts this week on the political implications of the Mormon pioneers.
